Arsenal are without a doubt one of the biggest clubs in world football – no matter what their rivals might have to say!
Of course, they’ve never won the Champions League and they haven’t won the Premier League since 2004, but the Gunners have been instrumental in the colossal rise of English football over the past 25 years.
Despite a recent lack of success – compared to most of their domestic rivals at least – Arsenal have huge international appeal and are one of the most supported clubs on the planet.
In fact, they have attracted a multitude of famous personalities over the years from all over the world.
Everyone knows Piers Morgan and Lewis Hamilton’s love for the Gunners, but what about the celebrities who are a little quieter with their support?
That being said, here are nine famous people you had no idea supporting Arsenal.
Matt Damon is such a big Arsenal fan that he once wrote “Tottenham sucks” on a piece of art at a charity auction.
In 2008, The Willow Foundation – a charity established in the 1960s by former Arsenal goalkeeper Bob Wilson to help critically ill people between the ages of 16 and 40 – commissioned a number of celebrities to paint canvases to auction them off.
Damon gladly agreed and let the world know exactly where his love for football lies, recovering £ 62 for the charity in the process.
And to be fair to Hollywood star Tottenham made aspire in 2008 * wink *.
How long will Mikel Arteta last as Arsenal manager? Let us know in the comments section below …
Osama Bin Laden
Numerous reports claim that Al Qaeda founding terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden backed Arsenal.
After studying at Oxford for a few years in the 1970s, Bin Laden developed a passion for football and became particularly attached to the Gunners.
Although he embarked on an activist career in the 1980s, Bin Laden was involved in George Graham’s team’s remarkable run to the European Cup Winners’ Cup final in the 1993 season / 94 and would have even attended a few home matches.
He then bought his son Abdullah a replica Ian Wright shirt.
Bin Laden isn’t exactly the kind of famous fan you’d want to brag about, but that didn’t stop Gunners fans having a little fun when they found out by chanting:
“Osama, woah-woah, Osama, woah-waoh, he’s hiding in Kabul, he loves the Arsenal.”
The long-distance runner isn’t exactly keeping his love for Arsenal a secret, but he certainly isn’t posting criticism of the club on social media like others might * cough * Piers Morgan * cough *.
Mo Farah is such a big fan of the club that he wanted his son’s middle name to be “Arsenal” before his wife dissuaded him, and the former Olympian says he has ambitions to work a day as a physical trainer for the Gunners.
“I started supporting them when I came to Britain as a child,” Farah told the Daily Mail in 2016.
“I liked the way they played. They also had a lot of players of African descent.”
Cuban dictator Fidel Castro’s love for Arsenal was first revealed in the 1994/95 season when the Gunners faced Auxerre in Ligue 1 in the European Cup Winners’ Cup.
Castro, who was coincidentally on a diplomatic visit to France at the time, decided to attend the second leg and saw his beloved Arsenal win 1-0 thanks to a goal from Ian Wright.
After the match, the Cuban revealed that he has been following the London club’s fortunes since the early 1970s, although I guess it’s no surprise that a serviceman decides to back a team dubbed “the Gunners” .
The Rolling Stones singer has been an Arsenal fan for over 50 years, and the 78-year-old still visits the Emirates whenever he can.
Although it was released in 1965, the song (I can’t get no) Satisfaction aptly describes life as an Arsenal fan over the past 15 years. Maybe Mick always knew what was going to happen.
Queen elizabeth ii
Royal sources have claimed for years that Her Majesty The Queen is a huge Arsenal fan, and while we’ll likely never see her in Islington enjoying a pre-match pint, her support for the club is genuine – just ask former Labor leader (and his colleague Gooner) Jeremy Corbyn!
Even former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas confirmed the rumors, telling Spanish radio: “It looks like the Queen is following football, and she told us she was an Arsenal fan. She seemed really know who I was, and we exchanged a few special words. “
The Queen’s mother was apparently a fan of the club, and support for the Gunners is in the family (but we’ll get to that later).
Jay-Z started supporting Arsenal through his close friendship with Thierry Henry.
A few years ago, he said he wanted to buy stock in the club and even take a seat in the Gunners boardroom. The rapper said he and his wife Beyonce Knowles would even move to London so he could be “involved in decision-making” in the Emirates. It is the commitment.
“We should be spending a lot more time in London. ‘Bey’ knows how much I love the sport and has known my interest in Arsenal for quite some time,” he said in 2010.
“I never want to be a secondary investor. I want to be a board member, involved in decision making… I’m at a point in my career where I’m ready for another investment like this.
“I’ve really gotten into football over the last 10 years and I’ve been saying for some time that I want an Arsenal percentage.”
Prince Harry may have moved away from his family in recent years, but he remains true to the line when it comes to football.
Like his grandmother and great-grandmother before him, Harry supports Arsenal and has been to Highbury and the Emirates several times over the years to watch them.
His brother and FA chairman Prince William, who supports Aston Villa, may be a better-known football fan, but he revealed his brother as a Secret Gooner in 2018 while speaking to a group of college students in a West London school.
Rocket Ronnie O’Sullivan is arguably the greatest snooker of all time, but he also has a passion for football.
That’s because the Essex man loves Arsenal and often uses the club as a distraction from the pressure of playing at the top of his sport.
In 2015, he bumped into his childhood hero Perry Groves, and despite his own royal status in the sport, he admits he was completely smitten by the star when they met.
