Facundo Pellistri sparks interest from European clubs after impressive performance for Uruguay – Reuters Sports News

This summer, Manchester United could be set to lose one of their most promising youngsters, Facundo Pellistri, as European clubs enter talks with his agents.

According The united newspaper“many La Liga and Serie A clubs have closely followed the player’s progress”.

The Uruguay international played alongside United team-mate Edinson Cavani on Thursday night and assisted in the first of Cavani’s two goals he scored against Mexico that night.

The 20-year-old signed for United on deadline day at the start of the 2020/21 season but is yet to make his competitive debut.

He featured in three pre-season friendlies last year, scoring one goal against Derby County.

He spent last season on loan at Deportivo Alaves but failed to get the regular first-team football he was hoping for, having made just 23 appearances, starting just six times for the club who have finished at the bottom of La Liga.

However, his form for his country, albeit in its infancy, has shown promise.

He picked up his third assist in four games on Thursday night when he netted Cavani’s goal and helped his country to a 3-0 win over Mexico in a friendly.

Pellistri will want to be part of Uruguay’s squad for the World Cup later this year so he will be looking to play regularly in the first team and if United can’t offer that he can look elsewhere.

The United Journal says: “Pellistri expects to discuss his role at the club with Erik ten Hag and his coaches in the upcoming pre-season.”

They added: “It is understood that initial contacts have taken place between intermediaries from various European clubs and the Uruguay international’s agent.”

It’s unclear what Ten Hag’s thoughts are on the youngster but his international performances will surely have given the Dutchman some serious thought on whether he can fit into his plans next season.
