Jesse Lingard: West Ham rekindle interest in Manchester United winger on free transfer | Soccer News

West Ham have made ‘initial inquiries’ with Jesse Lingard’s representatives into signing the midfielder from Manchester United on a free transfer.

Lingard’s contract at Manchester United expires this summer.

The England midfielder scored nine goals during a six-month loan spell at West Ham in the 2020/21 season while Newcastle attempted to sign Lingard in the January transfer window.

Earlier this month, United caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick dismissed criticism from Lingard’s brother after failing to bid farewell to Old Trafford against Brentford.

Gary Neville has argued Lingard doesn’t deserve special treatment after seeing two United favourites, Bryan Robson and Steve Bruce, dismissed without a sentimental send-off.

Speaking on the Gary Neville podcast, he said: “The nonsense about Jesse Lingard, look, Jesse has been at the club a long time, did a good job, but I saw Bryan Robson and Steve Bruce not playing in their last matches and failing to get a start in the cup final.

“One of them is possibly the greatest captain Manchester United have ever had and the other is one of the greatest and they didn’t get that send off, a fan farewell. I don’t know Not sure why Jesse Lingard deserves it.

Manchester United caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick has explained why Jesse Lingard hasn’t featured much in recent weeks following social media criticism from the striker’s brother.

“I was flushed in West Brom down the toilet. In the end, it doesn’t work, Jesse.”

On other summer departures, Neville said: “A lot of them will leave, their contracts are up, it’s the others. Well, you can’t just kick football players out of the club. This idea, they think that they have a God -right to get minutes on the pitch as they have played, all of them.

“Not one of them…David de Gea and [Cristiano] Ronaldo has held on this season, they have performed well, none of them apart from that can complain about what is happening to them this summer. These two or three months have been really shocking and I can’t wait for the season to end.

“I can’t wait to stop talking about it. Big clearance this summer.”

Newcastle and West Ham both attempted to sign the England international on deadline day in January, but United’s board decided against sanctioning a transfer.

The striker wants regular first-team football so he can work his way into Gareth Southgate’s England squad ahead of this year’s World Cup.

Lingard has started just four appearances for United this season with his last appearance as a substitute in the 3-1 loss at Arsenal on April 23.
